Road Accidents & Injuries
Road traffic accidents are the leading external cause of death for young people. In Greece, according to recent facts, 53.4% of annual deaths in youth is connected to road accidents (102/200 deaths per year). The majority of deaths due to road traffic accidents occurred amongst young adults (60%), whereas the rest of deaths were recorded in older adolescents (35.6%) and younger children (4.5%). The factors that contribute to injuries are frequently behavioral, with risk-taking behavior being the major cause of crashes. Young people are particularly vulnerable to road traffic accidents because of a combination of physical and psychological characteristics: limited experience, tendency to engage in risky behaviors (non-compliance to boundaries, likely to drive or agree to be driven recklessly or while intoxicated, not being afraid of death etc.). Alcohol use is strongly connected to road traffic mortality.
