Sexually Transmitted Diseases

While sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) affect individuals of all ages, they take a particularly heavy toll on young people. 1 in 4 adolescents has a sexually transmitted infection, while 60% of reported cases are among teenagers. The most common STD in the world is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). A study carried out at the Adolescent Health Unit showed that the prevalence of HPV infection among sexually active female adolescents (mean age 17.3 years) was 42% and a high percentage was infected with high risk types.
